Irish Monks believed that union with God could best be attained by withdrawal from civilization into harsh and isolated regions. Skellig Michael, off the Irish Kerry coast, was one of these isolated hazardous monastic island retreats founded about the 6th century by St. Fionan. To reach the most secure and remote areas on the island, the monks carved natural steps from the rock.

The Skellig's scenes from the most recent Star Wars film Episode VII "The Force Awakens" were filmed at the islands in 2014. The Skellig's features prominently at the end of the movie where the audience is reintroduced to Star Wars' original hero Luke Skywalker . Filming took place again in 2015 for the next installment of the Star Wars franchise Episode VIII "The Last Jedi" which was released in December 2017.
